The Northeast Vietnam 14 days

Day 1. Arrival in Hanoi

Arrive at Hanoi airport where an English-speaking tour guide will welcome you and take you to a hotel in the center of the city (20 miles – 45 min. drive). Relax and enjoy a 2-hour massage with medical herbs before checking into your room

The afternoon will be devoted to an orientation tour of Hanoi by rickshaw. Discover a city of poetry and markets, a city enchantingly balanced between tradition and modernity.

Day 2. Visit Hanoi

Begin exploring Hanoi with a walk around the exquisite grounds of the old Indochinese governor’s palace (now a presidential palace). Visit the unique One Pillar Pagoda and the stilt house of Ho Chi Minh, fondly known as “Uncle Ho”, the founder of modern Vietnam. Examine the interior of Ho’s mausoleum (closed Mondays and Fridays).

Visit Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest pagoda in Hanoi and Vietnam’s pagoda for defense. Located on an island in the West Lake, the pagoda surrounded by water is a marvelous sight. After, whet your appetite for discovering Vietnam’s unique cultures at the Ethnology Museum. This museum boasts detailed descriptions and exhibits showcasing the fascinating lifestyles and cultures of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic minority groups.

In the afternoon, visit the Temple of Literature. The temple, originally built in the 11th century, was dedicated to Confucius, the great Chinese philosopher. Naturally, it has since become a symbol of Vietnamese culture and academic excellence.

In the evening, enjoy a Water Puppet Show.

Day 3. Hanoi –Thac Ba Lake

At 8am, head northeast to Thac Ba Lake, the largest body of fresh water in Northern Vietnam.

Early in the afternoon, arrive at Vu Linh, a picturesque lakeside village which is home to the White Pants Dao. Meet local hosts and enjoy lunch in their wooden stilt house.

Spend the afternoon cruising on Thac Ba Lake and discovering the lives of the locals living in this spectacular landscape.

Enjoy dinner with Dao hosts and spend the night in their home.

Day 4. Thac Ba Lake – Ha Giang

After breakfast, journey to Ha Giang. Enjoy spectacular limestone and mountain landscapes on the way to Luc Yen, a small town known for its precious stones market. The ethnic Tay and Dao populate the town.

Take a 2 or 3 hour walk (13 miles from Viet Quang) to visit a village home to the rare ethnic group of Pa Then . The village is surrounded by a sumptuous landscape of waving palm trees and green rolling hills.

In the evening, arrive in Ha Giang and spend the night in a hotel.

Day 5. Ha Giang – Dong Van

After breakfast, drive along a mountain road to Dong Van, a small city located in the plateau. On the way, you may wish to make several stops to explore traditional villages and markets. Located 13 miles from Dong Van, Pho Bang is an ethnic village with rustic clay houses of thatched roofs which hosts the ancient Hmong palace.

In the evening, arrive in the quaint city of Dong Van. Enjoy some free time to explore the region and get acquainted with the locals.

Day 6. Dong Van – Meo Vac – Bao Lac

In the morning, head to Bao Lac, a lofty mountainous region of the Cao Bang province.

Upon arrival, check into the hotel. Next, enjoy an excursion to Khuoi Khon, a Black Lo Lo village of 70 families who live an independent, self-sustaining life.

A rare and cherished experience for any traveler wishing to learn about daily life in northern Vietnam is to spend time with the Lo Lo people of Khuoi Khon.

After being displaced from China by the government in the 18th century, many of the Lo Lo clans chose to immigrate south into Vietnam. Numbering approximately 4,200, these incredibly resilient people are one of Vietnam’s smallest ethnic groups. Of these, about 1,800 live around the massif overlooking Bao Lake, in the northwest part of Cao Bang province.

Spend the night in a Bao Lac hotel.

Day 7. Bao Lac – Ba Be

After breakfast, journey to Ba Be Lake, passing through Na Ban and Na Phac. On the way, visit many interesting colonial vestiges and an old castle, built by the French.

Arrive in Ba Be early in the afternoon, meeting the Tay hosts. Located in a remote hamlet, Be Be has only recently been accessed for Amica Travel and our guests. Spend the free afternoon exploring the area at your leisure

Enjoy dinner with the Tay hosts and spend the night in their home.

Day 8. Ba Be

In the morning after breakfast, trek along a path through the valley. After one hour, arrive at Ban Mo and explore this Tay hamlet. Continue the hike along a path next to the river and discover a Hmong village. Ascend the trail to enter a primitive forest, then descend to the Dau Dang cascades, where you will eat lunch.

Visit the waterfall then return to Coc Toc village via a boat trip across the lake.

Dine and spend a second night with the Tay home stay family.

Day 9. Ba Be – Cao Bang

Following a hearty breakfast, take a pleasant walk along the mountain track to Cao Bang, a truly beautiful province of high plateaus on the border between Vietnam and China. Tay, Nung, Dao and Hmong ethnic minorities populate this area.

Spend the evening at Cao Bang hotel.

Day 10. Cao Bang – Ban Gioc – Cao Bang

Drive to Ban Gioc falls, the most impressive falls of Northern Vietnam. Cross the equally spectacular Ma Phuc pass to reach Ban Gioc Falls. On the way, stop at Phuc Sen to explore a traditional forge village.

Arrive at Ban Gioc around noon. Visit the falls and enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before journeying to Cao Bang.

Check into a local hotel before an evening exploration.

Day 11. Cao Bang – Lang Son

Drive 1 hour to the Dong Khe District. Take a soft trek around the historic Coc Xa Mountain. Walk along the Quang Liet valley on a trail once used by the French Expeditionary Force during the Battle of RC4 (Oct. 1-10, 1950).

Drive to Lang Son via RN4. Visit the central market, which has a variety of Chinese products.

Day 12. Lang Son – Halong Bay

Early in the morning, depart for Ha Long Bay via Nga Ba Than. Arrive around lunchtime and embark on a wooden junk boat for an enchanting 2 day and 1 night Ha Long Bay cruise.

Board a luxury wooden junk boat for a 12:30 p.m. departure, cruising toward Bai Tu Long Bay (Daughter Bay) and across Ha Long Bay (Mother Bay), taking in the incredible vista. Enjoy lunch onboard, surrounded by unique and awe-inspiring scenery. By 2:30 p.m., arrive at the floating village of Vong Vieng.

Day 13. Halong Bay – Phu Lang pottery village – Ha Noi

Enjoy a buffet breakfast at 8 a.m. as the boat begins its journey back to the pier.

Disembark at around 11:30 a.m. and drive back to Hanoi, arriving at around 5 p.m. On the way, visit Phu Lang, a pottery village built in an original, rustic architectural style.

Return to Ha Noi in the evening and spend the final night in a hotel.

Day 14. Hanoi Departure

Travel to the airport for your return flight.
